Coleslaw Salad – Easy Recipe

A coleslaw salad is very easy to prepare. It is a salad made of white cabbage to which you can add red cabbage, carrots, celery, onion, etc. There is no original coleslaw recipe! Each area or family prepares it according to their own taste.

This coleslaw salad is very popular in the United States because it is very versatile and can be served with many dishes, especially with barbecue – BBQ, grill. The name of this salad comes from the Dutch “koolsla” which means cabbage salad. Americans call it “slaw” in short.

It is not wrong if we make a coleslaw salad with a mix of white and red cabbage or if we add some other elements such as fried bacon, carrots, sweet peppers, pineapple, ripened cheese, ripe cucumbers, onions or aromatic herbs. The dressing is also at your choice: from mayonnaise or mayonnaise mix with Greek yogurt to lighter, healthier versions, which are made only with yogurt or whipped milk or even with the simple vinaigrette mentioned above. The dressing is seasoned with salt and pepper but one can add, according to taste: lemon juice, simple or aromatic vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, spicy Tabasco sauce etc.

Ingredients:

14 ounce coleslaw mix with red cabbage and carrots*
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper

Preparation:

  1. Add the mayonnaise, sugar, lemon juice, white vinegar, salt and pepper to a large mixing bowl and whisk together until fully combined.
  2. Add in the coleslaw mix and stir well to combine.
  3. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
